ASEAN Workshop Identifies Strategies on Social Protection, Jakarta,
28 Feb - 1 Mar 2006
ASEAN officials have identified key strategies and initiatives to strengthen social protection systems in ASEAN at a two-day inter-Ministry regional workshop held at the ASEAN Secretariat from 28 February to 1 March 2006.

Organised by the Human Development Unit of the ASEAN Secretariat, the regional workshop on Strengthening Social Protection Systems in ASEAN brought together over forty-five representatives from the Ministries of Labour, Social Welfare and Development, Rural Development and Women to discuss the issue of social protection systems in ASEAN.
With respect to the labour sector, the participants identified the development of a social parameters database in all ASEAN Member Countries as the key strategy. They also identified the need for multi-stakeholder involvement in addressing social protection issues for the informal and public sectors, and an ageing workforce. Concerning child protection, it was proposed that a series of training for trainers focusing on different areas on child protection was necessary. On micro and area-based schemes, there was a call to strengthen and promote utilisation of local and indigenous practices and systems of self-help.
The two-day workshop was funded by the ASEAN-EU Programme for Regional Integration Support (APRIS) and the ASEAN-UNDP Partnership Facility (AUPF).
