The ASEAN Regional Programme on Disaster Management

A Regional Strategy for Disaster Reduction

The ASEAN Regional Programme on Disaster Management (ARPDM) was launched in May 2004. The ARPDM provides the framework for promoting concerted regional cooperation on disaster management in the ASEAN region. The programme outlines ASEAN’s regional strategy, priority areas and activities for disaster reduction. The ARPDM as a platform for cooperation and collaboration is being implemented through partnerships with other ongoing activities.

ARPDM Activity Profile

The ARPDM consists of two types of activities:

  1. Regional activities covering cross-boundary issues and involving inter-country collaboration; and
  2. Regional activities in support of national activities

The programme also has the following features:

  1. Implementation in sub-regional clusters involving three to four countries, as appropriate;
  2. Synergy with on-going disaster management programmes undertaken by international and regional organisations; and
  3. Partnerships with on-going mechanisms already functioning in a hazard-specific or thematic sector.
