ASEAN Provides Relief and Assistance to Indonesian Earthquake Victims
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 8 June 2006

Discussion on relief effort’s plan among ACDM team members
Support and relief to the earthquake-hit areas of Yogyakarta and Central Java has been pouring in from Indonesia’s fellow ASEAN Member Countries since 27 May 2006. Working closely with the Indonesian authorities, assisting teams from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand have been in place at various sites, providing medical assistance to victims and other forms of relief. Lao PDR, Cambodia and Viet Nam are sending food supplies and cash contributions to Indonesia.

The quick reaction to coordinate and provide relief within ASEAN was also the first real test of the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management (ACDM) since the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response was signed in 2005. The Agreement provides a regional comprehensive platform to strengthen preventive, monitoring and mitigation measures to reduce disaster losses in the region.
The ACDM has been able to mobilise support from the Member Countries and help ensure that the coordination among the humanitarian teams is well managed. Daily situation reports are prepared to provide information on the progress of operations, priority needs of the affected country and contact information. Administrative arrangements are also made to facilitate the receiving of assisting personnel and emergency supplies.
