Former ASEAN Secretary-General Launches New Book

The former Secretary-General of ASEAN, Mr. Rodolfo C. Severino, launched his new book entitled "Southeast Asia in Search of an ASEAN Community", at the ASEAN Secretariat on Monday, 20 November 2006.

"Southeast Asia in Search of an ASEAN Community"

Speaking to the ASEAN policy-makers, scholars, diplomats and journalists present at the event, Mr. Severino said that the objective of his book was "to seek clarification of what ASEAN is and is not, what ASEAN can and cannot do." He hoped that the book, which he described as neither a 'memoir' nor a 'scholarly' publication, would contribute to a better understanding of ASEAN.

ASEAN and India Holds Joint Technology Summit and Technology Platform (TSTP) 2006, New Delhi, 6 November 2006

The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Ong Keng Yong, delivered an opening remark at the Meeting.

The Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences of India, Kapil Sibal, opened the India-ASEAN Technology Summit and Technology Platform (TSTP) 2006 on 6 November 2006. The event, held for two days on 6-7 November 2006, aimed to provide an opportunity for the Resource and Development institutions (R&D), academia, industries and government of ASEAN countries and India to interface. Through this platform, it was expected that the technology partnerships between ASEAN and India would be facilitated.

Held at the Intercontinental Hotel, New Delhi, activities of the Summit comprised technical conferences, an exhibition as well as meetings of the S&T Ministers and officials from ASEAN and India. The Republic of Korea (RoK) also participated in the event as a special guest.

About seventy speakers representing R&D organisations, universities and various industries from ASEAN Member Countries and India presented the outcomes of their research work and state-of-the art of technologies in the areas of food science and marine technology; space technology; materials science and welding technology; ICT; and biotechnology. Five hundred people attended the five technical sessions.

At the exhibition, there were nine booths from ASEAN, eleven booths from India and one booth from the RoK showcasing scientific posters and technology products. Around 2,000 people visited the exhibition.

In addition, the Ministerial Conclave was also convened during the TSTP. The meeting came up with several new initiatives to further strengthen S&T cooperation, for instance, the creation of a common India-ASEAN S&T Development Fund to support joint R&D activities in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and advanced materials.

ASEAN and India will also further embark on joint undertakings to harmonise standards of a regulatory framework in relation to biotechnology products, and consider the establishment of an India-ASEAN institute for Intellectual Property for building human resource capacities and training to serve the ASEAN region. ASEAN and India will also encourage linkages between academic institutions, research laboratories, professional bodies and industry to create a knowledge grid and support the mobility of members of the scientific community.

ASEAN and India agreed in principle to hold technology summits on a regular basis, utilising existing platforms in India and ASEAN for encouraging competitiveness within a cooperative framework amongst all stakeholders.
