ASEAN Tourism Forum 2007
More than 1,600 participants from the tourism
industry and government are expected at the upcoming ASEAN Tourism
Forum that will be held from 26 January to 3 February 2007 in
Singapore.
The annual forum, also known as ATF, is a
cooperative regional effort to promote ASEAN as single tourist
destination and strengthen cooperation among the various sectors of
the ASEAN tourism industry. In projecting the region as an
attractive, multifaceted single destination, ASEAN hopes to attract
more tourists to its ten Member Countries and also promote
intra-ASEAN travel.
The theme for ATF 2007 is “ASEAN: Embracing Our
Past & Together Shaping Our Future”.
The ATF programme includes the meetings of the
ASEAN Tourism Ministers and industry associations, the ASEAN Tourism
Conference, and TRAVEX (a travel exchange).
The ASEAN National Tourism Organisations and
Tourism Ministers will meet from 27-30 January 2007, ahead of the
ASEAN Tourism Conference and TRAVEX, to review the progress of
tourism development and formulate regional tourism policies to
better develop and integrate ASEAN tourism. Also on the cards are
discussions with their counterparts from China, India, Japan, the
Republic of Korea and Russian Federation to further tourism
cooperation between ASEAN and these countries.
At the ASEAN Tourism Conference, travel industry
participants will be exchanging ideas, reviewing industry
developments and looking to formulate specific recommendations to
further accelerate the growth of ASEAN tourism, particularly the
youth travel market. TRAVEX, which facilitates the selling and
buying of regional and individual tourism products, will begin on 1
February 2007 and industry participation has already reached
capacity with all the 500 available booths snapped up by exhibitors
from more than 50 countries.
Each year, the hosting of ATF is rotated among
Member Countries. ATF 2007 marks the 26th anniversary of this event
since its inauguration in Malaysia in 1981. Last year, ATF 2006
hosted more than 3,150 participants generating a total of USD 30
million of sales value.

Australia Commits AUD 5 Million to Assist ASEAN
Countries Fighting Infectious Diseases

Australia has committed AUD 5 million to help ASEAN Member
Countries enhance their capacity and preparedness in fighting
emerging infectious diseases that threaten the East Asian region,
such as avian influenza. The announcement was made on 12 January
2007 by Australian Minister for Trade, Mr. Warren Truss, on behalf
of Foreign Minister Alexander Downer ahead of the 2nd East Asia
Summit in Cebu, the Philippines.
The AUD 5 million finance the second phase of the ASEAN Plus
Three Emerging Infectious Diseases Progamme (EID) which aims to
assist ASEAN Member Countries in developing a regional instrument to
mobilise multi –national (ASEAN) outbreak response teams, and
prepare activity proposals to address regional priorities.
The first phase of the EID programme, also supported by
Australia, was implemented from August 2004 to October 2005. It
helped ASEAN Member Countries establish strong working networks
through focused workshops on disease outbreak and investigation,
capacity-building for early warning and response systems,
information sharing through a regional website as well as tele- and
video-conferencing and staff exchanges.
The funding for the EID programme Phase 2 will be provided
through the AUD 100 million that Australia has committed over four
years to fight the threat of pandemics and other emerging infectious
diseases in the region.

ASEAN Leaders with Chinese
Prime Minister Wen Jiabao at the 10th ASEAN-China Summit
At the 10th ASEAN-China Summit, an agreement has been reached
on a five-year plan of action (for the period of 2007-2012) to
bolster cooperation in the field of Information and
Communications Technology (ICT).
The Plan of Action is the implementation of the Beijing
Declaration on ASEAN-China ICT Cooperative Partnership for
Common Development which was adopted in May 2005.
The Plan covers key programmes and strategic actions in the
area of
ICT Infrastructure Development, Universal Service, Human
Capacity Building, Network and Information Security, Trade and
Investment Facilitation and Inter-governmental Dialogue and
Exchange.
Some of the activities include the implementation of the
ASEAN-China Superhighway Project, narrowing the digital divide,
personnel training, development of pilot projects and
establishing the ASEAN-China Network and Information Security
Expert Group.

12th ASEAN Summit Officially Opens in Cebu, the

Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
opened the 12th ASEAN Summit on 13 January 2007 in Cebu City,
highlighting the theme of “One Caring and Sharing Community”.
In the Opening Statement, President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo said that ASEAN was committed on expanding its
trade area and stood firm on the issue of North Korea. She hoped
ASEAN would make progress on issues of energy independence, human
rights, economic integration and social justice.
“We want to advance the sense of community in our
shared interest to look after each other in terms of justice,
economic development and common security", the President said.

The 12th ASEAN Summit to be held in Cebu, the Philippines, on 10-15 January 2007
Leaders of the ten ASEAN Member Countries have
confirmed their attendance at the upcoming ASEAN Summit - which is
scheduled to be held on the island of Cebu, in the Republic of the
Philippines on 10-15 January. The six dialogue partners of ASEAN -
Australia, China, Japan, India, South Korea, and New Zealand are
also expected to attend the event. A number of agreements are
expected to be signed during the six-day Summit and its related
meetings to further bolster regional cooperation.
The President of the Philippines, Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo will chair the 12th ASEAN Summit which has the
theme "One Caring and Sharing Community." The meeting venues are
located at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) and the
Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa.
The ASEAN Summit was originally scheduled to take
place from December 10 to 15 last year but was postponed due to the
typhoon Seniang.
