Remarks by H.E. Ong Keng yong, Secretary-General of ASEAN at the Launch of Young Southeast Asia – 40 Inspiring Youths
Singapore, 27 November 2007


1. First, allow me to thank the National Youth Council of Singapore for assisting the ASEAN Secretariat in this endeavour, and in organising this morning’s event. And I also thank the Publisher – ArtPost Asia for once again printing a quality book about ASEAN.

2. I am very pleased to be here today to officially launch the book featuring the profiles of 40 promising and inspiring young people in ASEAN. The book titled is Young Southeast Asia – 40 Inspiring Youths. The publication is a highlight of the series of activities to commemorate ASEAN’s 40th anniversary.

3. I am proud of this book. Not only the colourful cover and creative contents are attractive. I am proud because the entire book is the product of a group of talented young people from all ten ASEAN Member Countries.  The book itself was written (contributed by young writer in each Member Country), edited and photographed by youths.  The diversity of Southeast Asia and its richness of culture, ethnicity, nature, spirit and talent are beautifully showcased.

4. Why youth are the focus of this book during the 40th anniversary of the Association? It is simply because 60% of ASEAN population today comprise of those  under 35 years old. They are undeniable one day the future leaders of ASEAN. We are therefore celebrating the dynamism and the potential of young achievers in the bright future of ASEAN.
 
5. How were these youths selected? The ASEAN Secretariat worked closely with each Member Countries through the relevant Ministries and youth agencies in identifying their national heroes and heroines between the age of 18 and 35. These young people were chosen on the merit of their accomplishments contributed to their communities and their nations. These young individuals show that they can make a difference in their own societies.

6. The forty youths featured in the book are from various backgrounds and different fields – such as community service, business, academia, art and etc. Despite diversified background and nationalities, each youth shares their stories of the challenges they had to overcome, the dreams they wish to fulfil and the force that keeps their endeavours alive.

7. Let’s enjoy the book. I hope that you will find new inspiration from reading this publication.  If nothing else, the photography is excellent and brings across the unique characteristics of the representatives portrayed.
