Cambodia Ratifies the ASEAN Charter

2 April 2008

Cambodia today  ratified the ASEAN Charter, becoming the sixth Member State of ASEAN to have done so.

His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, the King of Cambodia, had ratified the ASEAN Charter.  And the instrument of ratification was signed today by H.E. HOR Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, the Secretary-General of ASEAN, warmly welcomes the ratification by Cambodia, saying that it will further increase the momentum to the ASEAN Charter process.  “This is excellent news.  Now we just need four more ratifications for the Charter to enter into force,” he said.

Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam had earlier ratified the ASEAN Charter.
