NEW YORK – Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Myanmar, requested a meeting today with the ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, to express his sincere appreciation on behalf of the UN Secretary-General and the UN leadership at all levels for the leadership ASEAN has provided in the humanitarian mission in Myanmar.

Professor Gambari reassured Dr Surin that the UN Secretary-General is very much seized of the issue and that the UN was going through its own assessment for an effective and productive involvement in the humanitarian effort with ASEAN and the Government of Myanmar.

The UN, said Professor Gambari, stands ready to extend any support that the ASEAN leadership sees fit and appropriate in assisting the victims of Cyclone Nargis.
