ASEAN Ambassadors to Myanmar and TCG Members View Progress of Early Recovery in Three Cyclone-Hit Villages
8 October 2008

ASEAN Ambassadors based in Yangon visited three Cyclone affected villages on 7 October 2008 together with members of the Tripartite Core Group (TCG) which comprises ASEAN, Government of Myanmar and the UN. It was the first such joint visit after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in May 2008. Led by TCG Chairman, U Kyaw Thu, who is also Myanmar's Deputy Foreign Minister, the ASEAN Ambassadors, TCG members, and UNDP Country Director Toshihiro Tanaka visited Kyet Shar Village in Mawlamyainekyun Township, and Seik Gyi Village and Myat Lay Yon Village – both located in Kungyangon Township.

The group presented t-shirts donated by Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN, to school children and observed the progress of the resettlement development and solar water pumps construction at Kyet Shar village. Later, the group visited Seik Gyi village to see the progress of the TCG's Community Based Early Recovery Project. The project involves the construction of fishing boats, cleaning of community wells, development of water purification system, replanting of betel leaves, the renovation of a primary school and monastery. The project is being implemented by ASEAN volunteers and is expected to be completed next month. The group also briefly saw the ongoing construction of fishing boats supported by TCG in Myat Lay Yon Village, which is located near the Seik Gyi Village.
