Joint Press Statement The Second Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment
Singapore, 11 September 1995


  1. The Second Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME ) was held in Singapore on 11 Sep 95. The Meeting was attended by Ministers in charge of the Environment from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The Secretary .-General of ASEAN, the Philippines' Undersecretary for Environment and Natural Resources (Legal and Legislative Affairs) and the Thai Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment also participated in the Meeting. The Meeting welcomed the participation of Vietnam for the first time.

  2. The Meeting was held in an informal setting. During the Meeting the ASEAN Ministers exchanged views on several issues concerning ASEAN environmental co-operation. These included the ASEAN Co-operation Plan on Transboundary Pollution, ASEAN Environment Year 1995, the ASEAN Strategic Plan of Action on the Environment and the region’s long term objective to harmonize environmental quality standards.

  3. The Ministers requested the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN), which will be meeting in Bali, to redouble its efforts on various regional initiatives. They agreed that such in-formal gatherings have helped to create a better understanding and personal rapport among the ASEAN Environment Ministers. The informal meetings. have also provided opportunities for Ministers to exchange freely and frankly their views on emerging environmental issues. The Meeting also agreed to request the ASOEN to formulate the region’s inputs on environmental issues for the ASEAN Summit Declaration.

  4. The ASEAN Ministers agreed to convene an informal meeting again in 1996 at a venue to be determined.
