The ASEAN-Sectoral Dialogue partnership has been formalised through an Exchange of Letters between the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. ASEAN and Pakistan agreed to pursue cooperative activities in the following sectors: economic cooperation, environment, science and technology, tourism, drugs and narcotics, and human resource development. An ASEAN-Pakistan Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (APJSCC) is expected to be established soon.

In 1996, an informal meeting was held between representatives of the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) and the Secretary of Environment and Urban Affairs, Forest and Wildlife of Pakistan. The meeting was held to explore areas for possible collaboration between ASEAN and Pakistan on environment-related activities. As a follow-up to this meeting, both parties will identify specific areas of cooperation in the field of environment that can be taken up as a joint activity.
