ASIA PACIFIC ECONOMIC COOPERATION

ASEAN Member Countries continued to participate actively in APEC activities. Dialogues on economic trends and issues have provided the opportunity for sharing experiences on how economies in the Asia-Pacific region respond to common challenges and have formed the basis for examining possible areas of economic cooperation. Likewise. dialogues on trade and investment policies have provided the forum for APEC member economies to discuss global trade issues, particularly those relating to the Uruguay Round.

As called for by the Fifth Ministerial Meeting, a Meeting of APEC Ministers in charge of Trade Policy has been scheduled for 7 October 1994 in Jakarta to review the results of the Uruguay Round and its implication for the region.

The Fifth APEC Ministerial Meeting, which was held in Seattle, USA on 17-19 November 1993, endorsed the mission statement of APEC's Ad-hoc Group on Economic Trends and Issues (ETI) and adopted the "Declaration on an APEC Trade and Investment Framework"; while the informal meeting of APEC Leaders, held on 20 November 1993 on Blake Island, Seattle, took eight initiatives as the priority areas of cooperation among member economies.

Indonesia will be hosting the next APEC leaders meeting in Bogor on 15 November 1994, preceded by the Sixth APEC Ministerial Meeting on 11-12 November. Preparations for the two meetings are being made.
