This case study highlights how the distribution of agricultural inputs and the construction of small-scale infrastructure priorities helped improve agricultural productivity and livelihood incomes in six villages of Tha Leik Gyi village tract in Pyapon district, Ayeyarwady Delta. It also features how the ASEAN Volunteers’ involvement fostered a shared sense of responsibility among the communities.  |More|
Between August and November 2008, a Community Based Early Recovery (CBER) pilot project was implemented in Seik Gyi village, Kungyangon Township, with the aim of restoring livelihoods and rebuilding damaged infrastructure. Specifically, the project activities included i) replacing destroyed boats and restarting betel leaf cultivation, the principal source of livelihoods income prior to Cyclone Nargis, and ii) building toilets and repairing the monastery and village wells. The project capitalised on active community participation and the concept of building back better.   |More|
Between To build community resilience for future disasters, a Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) project has been implemented in five villages of Hay Man Village Tract, Bogale Township between January and August 2009. The project aims to raise community awareness and develop disaster preparedness and mitigation initiatives. |More|
Terrible tragedy has a way of bringing people closer together.
Those whose lives have been destroyed by Cyclone Nargis cling to each other for comfort; sharing their suffering, their food, their water and helping each other slowly rebuild their homes and businesses. |More|
At a swollen stream at a village outside Pyapon in the cyclone Nargis ravaged Irrawaddy Delta, a man searches through the grass, his dog by his side. Once, not that long ago, he would have trawled for fish; now his dog sniffs out water field rodents.  |More|

A trip to the field to assess the damage of Cyclone Nargis is a lesson in hardship; the hardship of the survivors and my own suffering during hours of travelling over bumpy roads! |More|
