Spotlight on:
The ASEAN Centre for Energy

The Jakarta-based ASEAN Centre for Energy, or ACE, was established through an agreement signed by the ASEAN governments in May 1998. Since ACE became operational in January 1999, it has played an important role in initiating and facilitating policies and activities in ASEAN related to the energy sector.

ACE’s mandate is to initiate, coordinate and facilitate regional, as well as joint and collective activities on energy. The Centre is headed by an Executive Director and operates under the supervision of the ACE Governing Council, comprising the ASEAN Senior Officials on Energy and a representative from the ASEAN Secretariat. The current Executive Director is Dr. Weerawat Chantanakome.

Since its establishment, ACE has played an active role in drafting the five-yearly ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation. The Plan of Action for 2004-2009 is currently being implemented by several specialist organisations, namely, the Forum of Heads of ASEAN Power Utilities/Authorities (HAPUA), the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE), the ASEAN Forum on Coal (AFOC), the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Sub-sector Network (EE&C-SSN), and the New and Renewable Sources of Energy Subsector Network (NRSE-SSN).

ACE also facilitates and coordinates the work of these specialist organisations in implementing the various programmes under the Plan of Action, including:

  • ASEAN Power Grid;
  • Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline;
  • Coal and Clean Coal Technology Promotion;
  • Energy Efficiency and Conservation Promotion;
  • New and Renewable Energy Development; and
  • Energy Policy and Environmental Analysis.
