ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE CITIES IN ASEAN

   

ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities

 

The ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC) was formed in June 2003 to develop strategies and action plans to drive the RESCP. The AWGESC is chaired by Singapore.

The Terms of Reference for the AWGESC are as follows:

  1. To develop a framework for sustainable cities in ASEAN that is applicable to yet accommodates the prevailing but varied circumstances among ASEAN cities.

  2. To develop strategies and action plans to realise the vision of sustainable cities in ASEAN.

  3. To promote the sharing of information and expertise in environmental protection and management to further enhance environmental sustainability in ASEAN cities.

  4. To recommend common targets and indicators to assess 'sustainability' for cities in ASEAN.

  5. To facilitate and organise activities, including seminar, workshops, etc. to promote inter-city environmental co-operation and facilitating transfer of know-how and expertise.

  6. To foster better understanding and closer co-operation amongst relevant agencies of ASEAN member countries, and international and community-based organisations in the area of urban environmental management and monitoring.

  7. To promote public awareness and encourage 3P (Private, Public and People) Sectors' participation in implementing the action programmes to achieve the vision of sustainable cities in ASEAN.
