Malaysia proposes the establishment of a regional based humanitarian relief centre

www.besonline.rtm.net.my, June 5, 2006

Singapore - Deputy Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Najib has proposed the establishment of a regional based humanitarian relief centre in which member states will commit a set of forces in the event a disaster strikes.
When addressing the plenary session of the Shangri-La Dialogue, Dato' Seri Najib said the set of forces, to be made up of civilian and military personnel, would be deployed in the event of a disaster in the region.

He said training and contingency plans could be drawn up and in the event something happens and help is needed, this centre could be activated.

He said the spirit of helping one another was evident during the Asian tsunami in 2004 where aid and assistance poured into the affected areas.

Although the concept of comprehensives security was probably regarded as "passe" these days, he said, he though that it was still "as relevant today as it was yesterday".
