Indonesian government revises quake death toll downward

TheJakartaPost.com, June 5, 2006

BANTUL, Yogyakarta (AP): Indonesia's government on Monday revised the death toll from the country's May 27 earthquake downward to 5,782, saying some victims had been counted twice and others had been found alive.

The Social Affairs Ministry had earlier said that 6,234 people had died from the magnitude 5.9 quake in central Java.

"We found that there was double counting in our data and revised the toll," said Wagimin, a ministry official.

Some victims who had been reported dead were also found alive, staying with relatives or elsewhere, the ministry said.

It also said that 36,299 people had been injured in the quake. (***)
