Institute of Tourism is located in 99 Beisihuan Donglu, Chaoyang District, Beijing. It covers an area of 5.3 hectares, with floor space of 39,700 square meters and approximately 6,000 square meters of green area. Institute of Tourism is one of the earliest tourism institute of higher learning offering four-year courses in China.
Institute of Tourism was originally Branch college affiliated to Beijing Second Foreign Language Institute, established in 1978. In early 1980, with the care and support of the leaders of the Central Government and Beijing Municipality, “Preparatory Committee of Beijing Institute of Tourism” was formed. In April, 1985, upon the approval of the State Educational Commission, the college was officially designated by the name as Institute of Tourism, Beijing Union University. The institute was moved to the present site during the summer vacation of 1991.
Currently the institute offers four types of school—running:
1. Ordinary higher education
The institute offers five departments:
International Leisure and Tourism Management Department; International Hotel Management Department; Tourism English Department; Tourism Japanese Department and Food & Beverage Management Department, with eight specialities: tourism management; international hotel management; accounting management; market promotion; English; Japanese, food & beverage operation and management, as well as cultinary and food & beverage management.
2. Adult higher education
The night university of the institute now offers four specialities: hotel management; tourism English, tourism Japanese and Chinese-speaking tour-guiding. The institute is also designated by the Self-Taught Exam Committee to-be responsible for the examinations of the majors of “Tourism Management”, “Tour-Guiding” and “ Hotel Management”
3. Foreign Students Education
The institute has established intercollegiate relations with over ten foreign universities and colleges and employed more than one hundred foreign experts to give lectures in the institute in the past ten years. Meanwhile, over one hundred teachers have been sent abroad for further study. In 1993, the institute started to enroll foreign students from over the countries and regions.
4. Various kinds of Training Items
Beijing International Hotel Training Center (BIHTC) was founded in 1992, which was rectified by Beijing Municipaliy in 1995 as a training base for “ international trade professionals”, Since 1996, BIHTC has been responsible for the items that ensure the mid--and high--level managers of tourist hotels within Beijing area for their training abroad as well as the training of Beijing’s chefs to help them get certificates showing different ranks. BIHTC is also in charge of the training of tour guides for their qualification exams and the training of accountants in Beijing. To date, tens of thousands of tourism managerial professional of different types and strata have been cultivated and trained in Institute of Tourism. The institute has now an enrollment of 1,500 undergraduates and over 600 students for adult education.
The institute boasts a contingent of teaching staff who are well experienced and academically competent. Scores of academic works of tourism-related disciplines, teaching materials and textbooks have been compiled and published. Part of these items have filled the gaps in the field of tourism research. “Tourism Tribune”, the institute’s academic magazine, and is acknowledge as China’s “Chinese core magazine” and is awarded the first place among “tourist and economic core magazines”. The institute boasts sophisticated Teaching facilities including Language labs, broadcasting control and recording facilities, closed-circuit TV system as well as computer rooms and library. There are also a travel service and a restaurant for the students to do their field work.
Our school –running principle is to get foothold in Beijing, serve Beijing, face the capital’s tourism market and Tourism industry, cultivate professional with practical capability and innovative spirit, strive to achieve best efficiency and quality and continuously improve the school-running level.
The institute will take undergraduate education as the key link, achieve the pattern of coordination development of tourist higher vocational education and continuing education, expand and consolidate international cooperation so that the institute will become a mature training center for Beijing’s mid-and high-level management professional, an exchange center for tourism education and international cooperation, a base for tourism research and information consultancy, a training center for in –service managerial cadres and professional backbones. The institute will strive to earn good reputation, to achieve the aim---to be in leading position among China’s tourism colleges and renowned internationally.

5. Training objective of Ordinary Higher Education
The students are trained as mid-and high-level professionals with good political and ideological quality, decent professional ethics, sound theoretical basis and strong comprehensive ability so as to meet the needs of China’s modernization drive and the development of modern tourism industry.
6. Teaching Plan
Composition of courses: public subjects; professional basic subjects; practice teaching, graduation (design) thesis.
Teaching Language: Chinese.
7. Requisite for Enrollment
Senior high school graduates are required to take part in the national entrance examination and reach the grade line as required.
8. Qualification for Graduation
The Students are required to complete all the subjects stipulated in the teaching plan and pass all the examinations.

The training center of Institute of Tourism, Beijing Union University, is a unified administrative institution for training work. It is a training center for Beijing’s tourism trade and National Tourism Administration.
Its school-running principle is: adhere to the institute’s principle-Education is combined with industry and serves industry; stick to the combination of institute with enterprises, the combination of industry with learning; face the tourism industry and serve enterprises; cultivate mid- and high-level professional managerial personnel and technical backbones.
The training center is composed of four sections:
1.Modern Hospitality Industry Management Training Department (BIHTC).
This department is responsible for training hotel managers in Beijing area as well as general managers and managers of main hotel departments across the country. Hundreds of different types of training classes have been held since 1992. Over 800 mid-and high-level managerial personnel in the tourism enterprises have been trained. Entrusted by National Tourism Administration (NTA) and Beijing Tourism Administration (BTA), our experts have been sent to Qinghai, Tibet, Xingjing and Guangxi Provinces, for training. We have also helped train cadres from Lhasa and Yunnan tourism enterprises in Beijing. In addition, our center is actively involved in international cooperation. We have had cooperations with Purdu University, U.S.A, College of Tourism Management , Hawaii University, Australian Hotel Management Institute and hotel management Institutes from Austria, France and Switzerland. Good results have been scored.
Entrusted by National Tourism Administration and Beijing Tourism Administration, BIHTC is also holding training classes for general managers, managers from different hotel departments and seminars all the year round.
2. International Cooperation Department (Office of Foreign Affairs)
This department is responsible for organizing international exchanges, cooperative school-running and employing foreign experts.
We have had intercollegiate cooperation with tourism institutes from more than ten countries. We have sent both teachers and students to pursue their studies in tourism institutions from France, the Netherlands, the United States and Canada. We have also organized mid-and high-level managerial personnel in Beijing’s tourism enterprises to go abroad for visits and further study.

3. Vocational Education Department
This department is in charge of self-taught exams of tourism higher education and vocational education. Over 600 students are enrolled annually, majoring hotel management and Chinese-speaking tour guiding. The length of schooling is three years. Upon passing the examinations of all subjects, the students are conferred with graduation certificates. The State Educational Commission recognizes their studies.
Before exams, coaching classes for tour guides are held every year. Rates for passing the exams are high.

4. Culinary and Food & Beverage Management Training Center (Training Center for Professional Skill of Institute of Tourism, Beijing Union University)
The center is responsible for training professional technicians, food & beverage managerial personnel. Entrusted by Beijing Tourism Administration, Labour and Social Security Bureau, we train pastry cooks (both Chinese and Western food), chefs, chief chefs, etc. After passing the exams organized by BTA, they are awarded qualification certificates. Over 10,000 people have been trained since 1992.
