Located in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, Tourism School of Sichuan University grew out of the Tourism Department (founded in 1980s) of Sichuan University, the most prominent university in West China. In July 1998, the Tourism Department of Sichuan University was renamed Tourism School of Sichuan University. In July, 2000, in order to foster the development of the tourist industry of West China, the school and Sichuan Provincial Government worked hand in hand in the establishment of Sichuan Provincial Tourism Administration College, and Mr. Xu Shiqun, deputy director of the Standing Committee of Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress, was invited to take up the post of the president of the college.
Right now, there are four departments and one institute under the tourism school:
The Hospitality Management Department
The Department of Tourist Enterprises Management
The Department of Tourist Resources Planning & Scenic Spots Management
The Tourist Culture Department
The Tourist Planning & Development Institute.
With a reasonable age structure and complete specialties, Tourism School of Sichuan University now boasts a strong teaching and research team. There are altogether 30 teaching and research staff members, 5 of whom are professors, 11 associate professors. Eighty-four percent of the staff is young and middle-aged, and quite a few have had experience in studying abroad, such as the U.S.A., Japan, Britain and France.

In Tourism School of Sichuan University are:
Altogether, there are now 800-plus students in Tourism School. The master-degree program in the field of tourist administration is the only one where the master’s degree of tourism is conferred in Sichuan Province. The program includes four research fields:
The tourist resources planning & development
The hospitality management
The travel agency management
The tourist culture
Based on the principle “ Broad Learning, Solid Foundation and High Quality ”, Tourism School of Sichuan University turns out every year graduates who have solid foundation, broad ken and strong operational ability. For this reason, the school was designated by Sichuan Provincial Government as the provincial training base of undergraduate students major in tourist management and won the first prize of the Excellent Teaching of Sichuan Province.
Undergraduate study system is composed of 8 semesters, 4 academic years (each academic year is divided into 2 semesters).
Graduate study system is composed of 6 semesters, 3 academic years.
In an academic year, the first semester begins in September, ends in next January; the second one begins in February, ends in June.
Undergraduate must:
Complete 60-odd courses, 1,978 class hours of required curricula
Get 165 total credits
Have 44 weeks of concentrated practice in related tourist enterprises
Pass examinations and the thesis
Graduate must:
Complete 12 required courses
Get 32 total credits
Complete teaching practice at least one fourth of an assistant’s semester-work
Attend 6 seminars, and make an academic report
Pass examinations and the thesis
