Environmental Indicators

Environmental Indicators For Clean Air

GOAL: To achieve and maintain good air quality to safeguard good public health (PSI < 100)

No

 OBJECTIVES

ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS

Output & Performance Environmental Quality
1.

To ensure the availability and quality of air quality data

· No. of days in a year ambient SO2, NO2, CO, PM10 levels* exceeded the WHO / USEPA air quality standards

· No. of days in a year that Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) exceeded 100 (unhealthy)

2.

To reduce air emissions from mobile sources

 · Percentage of vehicles that meet city/national standards during road side inspection

3.

To reduce air emissions from land based sources

· Percentage of new industries that submit Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to respective authorities

4.

To increase energy efficiency and the use of cleaner fuels

· Ratio of unleaded to leaded petrol sold

* Ozone, lead and PM2.5 can be monitored in the long term. (measuring ambient levels of lead is a good system indicator for objective 4)

Environmental Indicators For Clean Water

GOAL: To achieve ASEAN Long-Term Goals for water quality intended for various uses by 2010 and move towards sustainable supply and use of water.

No

 OBJECTIVES

ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS

Output & Performance Environmental Quality
1.

To achieve good accessibility and quality of water supply

 · Percentage of households with access to potable water infrastructure - defined as water at a tap in home 24/7

· Percentage of households with tap water that meets WHO drinking water standard

·  Annual average levels of pH, dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand and faecal coliform in surface and ground water

·  Percentage of available freshwater from ground and surface water extracted for use compared to the sustainable (safe) yield

2.

To protect water resources, safeguard ecosystems and public health

 · Percentage of households and industries linked to sewerage system or operating their own system where the resulting discharge meets national standards

3.

To move towards efficient use, sustainable supply and use of water

· Average water consumption (liters/day/person) compared to a standard amount needed for daily living (cooking, bathing, drinking)

4.

To inculcate environmental responsibility and ownership

· Percentage of industries that have implemented programmes showing environmental responsibility and ownership (self regulation schemes like water audit, report on water quality and use, using recycled water)

· Percentage of schools at all levels with water conservation educational programmes

Environmental Indicators For Clean Land

GOAL: To achieve minimal land disposal of waste and move towards sustainable production and consumption patterns

No

 OBJECTIVES

ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS

Output & Performance Environmental Quality
1.

To ensure the effective storage, segregation and collection of wastes

 ·  Frequency of cleansing of streets and public areas (no. of times a week)

·  Percentage of waste at source that is stored in dedicated holding areas/ receptacles (eg. bin centers, refuse chutes) before disposal

· Percentage of waste collected from door to door / collection point

· Percentage of waste transported in covered vehicles on a daily basis

· Percentage of recyclable (3R) waste segregated at source

·  Percentage reduction in total waste generated a year
